The city of Vijayapura
â€œVijayapuraâ€-an important historical city is well known for its monumental heritage. It is associated with many prominent dynasties that ruled the city including Adil Shahiâ€™s. The city is known for its past glory, where the greatest mathematician and astronomer of medieval India Bhaskara II were born. This was the home for many sufi saints and a rich culture was instilled by great saints like Lord Basaveswara and Akkamahadevi. Woman of valour Sultana Chand Bibi was the Regent of Vijayapura during 1550-90. â€˜Go Gumbazâ€™ is the largest dome ever built next in size only to St.Peterâ€™s Basilica in Rome. The other monuments include Ibrahim Roza, Jama Masjid, Taas Bowdi, Asar Mahal, Upali Buruz, Malik-Maidan-E-Tohf etc. Presently it is the headquarters of Vijayapura district. The city houses two PG centers, two medical colleges, two engineering collages and a number of para-medical and general colleges besides the Karnataka state womenâ€™s university. Nearby places of interest include Almati Dam, Kudal Sangam, Badami Caves, Solapur, Pandharpur, Tuljapur, Kolhapur, Bande Nawaz Darga, Gulbarga, Hampi,Gangaapur, Basawana Bagewadi.
